This free-to-play game includes characters from Warner Bros., DC Comics, Turner Entertainment, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and Even HBO.
Some popular characters you will immediately recognize are Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Taz, and Tom & Jerry. They even have characters from live action shows and movies like Arya Stark from Game of Thrones and NBA superstar LeBron James from Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The gameplay is similar to the most popular platform games of all time, the Super Smash Bros. series. Different stages vary in layout and design, which favors some characters more than others. The objective of the game is to deal enough damage or hitting your opponents off the stage. Unlike other platform fighting games, MultiVersus is more commonly played in its 2 versus 2 mode instead of the 1 versus 1.
MultiVersus has both single player and multiplayer modes. Released in August 2022, the game is available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S. Media outlets GameSpot and IGN rated it a strong 8 out of 10. The game’s main selling point right now is that it is free to play, contrary to most of its competitors.
MultiVersus is one of the newest games on the market, so they are currently still on their base set of characters with a single addition. They have only added Morty Smith from Rick & Morty so far, but more should be coming in the near future. There are 18 playable Fighters in the game, all famous characters from different media universes.
From the cult classic cartoon Adventure Time, MultiVersus has the two main characters Finn the Human and Jake the Dog. They also took Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn from the DC Universe, with Black Adam set to be added sometime around Season 1. It also features Arya Stark from HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Iconic characters Bugs Bunny and Taz from Looney Tunes also make an appearance. More cartoon characters like Shaggy Rogers and Velma Dinkley from Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry from their eponymous show are playable in the game. Perhaps the most surprising character is NBA superstar LeBron James, representing Space Jam: A New Legacy. Other characters include the Iron Giant and Stripe from Gremlins.
Players will notice that the game’s Premium Founder’s Pack comes with 30 Character Tokens. These are used to unlock characters, which means that there are definitely more characters to be added in the future. There are several ways to unlock new characters in MultiVersus and we will cover each one in this article.
Unlocking Characters in MultiVersus
There are a couple of steps to take when trying to unlock new characters in MultiVersus. Everyone will have Wonder Woman unlocked by default, but you will have to unlock everyone else. You can use Gold to unlock them. Gold is MultiVersus’s free in-game currency.
Depending on the Fighter, you may need around 1500 to 3000 Gold to unlock them. You can earn Gold by playing in public or online matches. Obviously, winning will reward you with more Gold than losing. You will receive 25 Gold when other players Toast you as well. Completing starter missions will give you 2000 Gold, while leveling up the battle pass gives you 500.
Another way to unlock characters in MultiVersus is by using Gleamium. Gleamium is the game’s premium in-game currency that you can get by paying real money. Packages for this currency range from $4.99 to $49.99. Each Fighter costs 700 Gleamium to unlock, which is quite expensive. Only use Gleamium if you do not have the patience or time to grind for enough Gold to unlock characters in MultiVersus.
Lastly, you can use Character Tokens to unlock characters. Unlike Gold, you cannot earn these by playing matches. The only way to get Character Tokens is by buying the Founder’s Pack using real money. There are currently three types of Founder’s Packs. The Standard Founder’s Pack gives you 15 Character Tokens, the Deluxe gives you 20, and the Premium provides you with 30 Tokens.
Best Characters to Unlock
Because there are currently only 18 Fighters in the game, you can get by with purchasing the Deluxe Founder’s Pack. It comes with 1 exclusive Rare Banner, 1 Epic Banner, 1 Epic Ring, 1 Premium Battle Pass, and 1000 Gleamium.
If you are looking for something cheaper, the Standard Founder’s Pack is already quite decent with its 15 Character Tokens. Wonder Woman is already unlocked by default, so you are only left to unlock two other characters, which should be easy enough using Gold.
The competition in MultiVersus is quite good considering that it is such a new game. However, there will always be characters that are stronger than others. This helps with the dynamic of matchups and combinations for both 1v1 and 2v2 modes.
When unlocking characters in MultiVersus, you should know which ones to prioritize. Consider your playstyle, level of experience, and your partner if you prefer 2v2 mode. That being said, we have also compiled the most broken and overpowered characters in MultiVersus if you want a quick cheat sheet.
