This Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon is one of the most popular from Generation II. Players from the classic games would always grind to evolve Larvitar to Pupitar and then Tyranitar because it was always one of the coolest looking Pokémon. In Pokémon GO, Tyranitar is a tier-three Raid Boss.
This dinosaur-looking Pokémon looks like a Legendary Pokémon and is almost as strong as one. If you chance upon a Raid with Tyranitar as the Boss, you will not want to pass it up. You should know how to form a team to beat this Rock and Dark-type Pokémon.
If you happen to come across this powerful Raid Boss, check out our detailed guide on the best Tyranitar counters in Pokémon GO.
Pokémon GO Raids

Raids are occasional events that happen in Pokémon GO Gyms. They have time limits, so you should join one whenever you see it. An egg icon will appear on top of a Gym on your map to signify that a Raid is about to happen there. When the timer on the egg runs out, it hatches, and the Raid will begin. The egg will then be replaced by the Pokémon that serves as the Raid Boss.
You can only join the Raid lobby after the egg timer runs out. There will be a new timer to show how much time is left for the Raid. Each lobby has room for 20 players, so it may get filled very quickly. You can bring up to six Pokémon in your team for a Raid. Remember to bring your strongest ones because Raid Bosses are strong.
If a Pokémon faints, you can use Revive to bring it back. When all your Pokémon faint, you can just form a new party and rejoin the Raid if there are still slots. Tyranitar is a tier-three Raid Boss, which means it is strong. You will be rewarded with Premier Balls if you beat it depending on how much you helped in the Raid. You can then use those Premier Balls to try and catch it.
Tyranitar

Tyranitar is a Rock and Dark-type Pokémon from Generation II. It is strong enough to be considered the sole Pseudo-Legendary from its Generation. Tyranitar is the final form evolution of Larvitar and then Pupitar. This Pokémon is shaped like a dinosaur, with hard scaly armor. It has spikes on its back and claws on its arms and feet.
In Pokémon GO, Tyranitas has a Raid Boss Combat Power of 23779. After you catch it, it can have a maximum Combat Power of 4335. It also has 251 Attack, 207 Defense, and 225 Stamina, all very high base stats for non-Legendary Pokémon. Because of its dual types, its moves are boosted by Partly Cloudy and Fog weather. Tyranitar’s best moves are Bite and Stone Edge.
You will get 7 Candy and 400 Stardust as a bonus reward for capturing Tyranitar. You will need 75,000 Stardust and 75 Candy to get its Second Charge move. If you have a Larvitar, you will need 25 Candy to evolve it to Pupitar. After that, you will need another 100 Candy to evolve Pupitar into Tyranitar.
How to Beat Tyranitar
Rock-type Pokémon are weak against Water and Grass-types, so consider bringing those. It is also a Dark-type, so Fighting, Fairy, and Bug-types will be super effective against it. Do not use Electric, Ghost, or Psychic Pokémon because they are ineffective against Tyranitar. You can have a team of up to six Pokémon in a Raid, so we will provide you with several options.
Lucario, Suicune, Machamp, and Blaziken are all very strong against Tyranitar. If you do not have those Pokémon, Hariyama and Gyarados will also be great choices.
Lucario

Lucario is one of the most popular Generation IV Pokémon. This Fighting and Steel-type Pokémon is the evolution form of Riolu. Fans were originally introduced to Lucario in the Sinnoh region, and it has been a favorite since.
In Pokémon GO, Lucario has a maximum Combat Power of 3056. It also has decent base stats with 236 Attack, 144 Defense, and 172 Stamina. This Pokémon can learn strong Fighting-type moves like Counter and Aura Sphere, which are good Tyranitar counters in Pokémon GO.
Suicune

Suicune is one of the three Legendary Beasts of Generation II. This Water-type Pokémon was the mascot for the cult classic video game Pokémon Crystal. One of the most popular Legendaries of all time, Suicune combines raw power with a mystical aesthetic.
In Pokémon GO, Suicune has a very high maximum Combat Power of 3372. It also has good base stats with 180 Attack, 235 Defense, and 225 Stamina. It can learn very powerful moves like Hydro Pump and Snarl. Hydro Pump is one of the strongest Water-type moves, and it will deal massive damage on Tyranitar.
Machamp

Machamp is another fan favorite, this time from Generation I. It is the final form evolution of Machop and Machoke. One of the most iconic Fighting-type Pokémon, Machamp, is many players’ first choice when picking one for their team.
In Pokémon GO, Machamp has a maximum Combat Power of 3455. Its base stats are 234 Attack, 159 Defense, and 207 Stamina. Fighting-type moves are super effective against Tyranitar, and Machamp can have two of the strongest ones in Counter and Dynamic Punch.

Hariyama

Another iconic Fighting-type Pokémon, Hariyama, was first introduced in Generation III. It is the evolution form of Makuhita. Hariyama has an intimidating character design with its wide body and very large hands.
In Pokémon GO, Hariyama has a maximum Combat Power of 3198. Its base stats are also fairly high for a non-starter Pokémon.
