Rotten Breath Overview

Rotten Breath is essentially a Scarlet Rot version of a normal Fire attack in Elden Ring. Dragons throughout Soulsborne games don’t necessarily breathe fire like in any other fantasy game with dragons. 

In Elden Ring, Dragons come in all forms. Some are easy to kill like the Dragonbarrow, while others require some time and planning to take down. 

Rotten Breath can be charged to increase its duration over an area. It doesn’t cost that much FP, but frequent usage can also drain your FP quite fast. Some enemies are also immune to Scarlet Rot, though most bosses in the game are weak against it. 

When dealing with difficult bosses, blasting them with Rotten Breath is a good strategy to chip away their HP fast. 

Getting Rotten Breath in Elden Ring 

Rotten Breath in Elden Ring can be unlocked along with other Dragon Incantations at the Chapel of Dragon Communion or the Cathedral of Dragon Communion. 

The Chapel of Dragon Communion can be found on an island accessible through Limgrave’s Coastal Cave. On the other hand, the Cathedral of Dragon Communion is found in the southwest portion of Caelid. 

Inside the Chapel, there will be an in-game message that informs you of the location of the Cathedral. 

Once you get to the Chapel or Cathedral of Dragon Communion, you’ll see a blazing red sconce in front of a dead Dragon. Walk up to this sconce while holding at least one Dragon Heart and scroll through the options to find Rotten Breath.
