Have you found the Legendary Bison in Red Dead Online?
Red Dead Online has released a whole new lineup of legendary animals that you can find, study, or even hunt for their pelts and carcasses. While there were only 16 original legendary animals in Red Dead Redemption 2, the online version ramped it up to a total of 40. There are now several variants of the same animal, including multiple beavers, foxes, wolves, and bison.
There are three species of legendary bison that you can find in different locations throughout the Wild West. The Legendary Tatanka Bison, Legendary Winyan Bison, and Legendary Payta Bison are some of the largest and most beautiful creatures in the game. Hunting them also gives you access to special equipment and clothing.
If you want to check out these majestic creatures, check out our detailed guide on where to find the Legendary Bison in Red Dead Online.
There were originally 16 legendary animals you could spawn and hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2. Each one would only spawn in a specific location and under the perfect conditions. The same applies to Red Dead Online, except the number of legendary animals in the game has been ramped up to 40.
There are now several legendary species for each type of animal. Each of these legendary animals give out legendary pelts and carcasses that you can sell or trade off for special equipment or clothing.
If you are following the Naturalist specialist role in Red Dead Online, Harriet Davenport will ask you to study each legendary animal as you progress in rank. On the other hand, the hunter Gus will reward you for bringing him the pelts of each one. Be careful, however, as Harriet will be angry at you for hunting animals and may even refuse to work with you for a while.
In this article, we will be discussing where to find each of the three legendary bison and how to study or hunt them down.
Where to Find the Legendary Bison
There are three species of legendary bison in Red Dead Online. The Legendary Tatanka Bison, Legendary White Bison, and Legendary Winyan Bison are some of the most majestic creatures you will see in the game. They are also generally easier to find and hunt than some other legendary animals, so they can be a great start.
Here are the three legendary bison and where to find them.
Legendary Tatanka Bison
One of the many legendary animals in Red Dead Online, the Legendary Tatanka Bison is a one-of-one subspecies. Known to many as the most intimidating of the three legendary bison, this animal gives you the Legendary Tatanka Bison Pelt and Legendary Tatanka Bison Horn once you hunt and skin it.
Although it may look like the common black bison from afar, you will notice that it has white colors across the back and head. Be careful approaching it because the Legendary Tatanka Bison will immediately charge you once you provoke it. Unlike regular animals, you cannot damage this legendary creature’s pelt regardless of how many times you attack it. Use your best weapons to kill it as quickly as you can.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, the Legendary Tatanka Bison was located in Hennigan’s Stead in New Austin. Its location was changed for Red Dead Online. It now spawns around the Heartland Overflow. The biggest landmark for this area is the Heartland Oil Fields, so you can start there.
Once you hunt down the Legendary Tatanka Bison, sell its pelt to Gus Macmillan. He will then craft the pelt into the Tatanka Hood and Coat, which you can purchase from him.
Legendary Winyan Bison
The Legendary Winyan Bison is easily recognizable due to its white fur. However, it spawns in the snowy area of the Ambarino region. It is the equivalent of the Legendary White Bison from Red Dead Redemption 2.
This rare animal can only be found around Deadboot Creek. The specific conditions at which the Legendary Winyan Bison spawns are clear weather and sometime from 9pm to sunrise. Look for a large bison with pale yellow fur. Its color may be camouflaged in the thick snows of Ambarino, so look close or use your Deadeye if necessary. Because it only appears at night, walk slowly and safely to avoid provoking it and getting yourself killed.
The Legendary Winyan Bison is aggressive once you catch its attention, so always have your best weapons with you. Remember that you cannot damage its pelt or carcass, so use whatever weapon you need to kill it before it gets to you. Avoid shotguns, pistols, or any other short range or low damage weapons. Repeaters or rifles are typically the best guns to use.
After you kill the Legendary Winyan Bison, bring its pelt to Gus Macmillan. He will then craft it into the Winyan Hood and Coat, which he will sell to you.
Legendary Payta Bison
The last legendary bison on our list is also the most valuable. Like the other two, this rare bison’s Naturalist mission can only be unlocked after you reach Rank 5. Once you achieve Rank 5, talk to Harriet Davenport and you should see it on the Legendary Animal Sighting mission list. If you are planning to hunt this animal, remember that Harriet will be angry at you and may refuse to work with you for a while after.
Located in Little Creek, the Legendary Payta Bison is usually leading its herd around the area. You will immediately notice a larger than usual bison with thick red fur. Although it may seem sociable with other bison, the Legendary Payta Bison will still charge at you if you provoke it.
Once you find it, make sure you shoot it with your best rifle or repeater. Try not to hit any of the other bison in the area. If you waste your bullets, the Legendary Payta Bison might charge and trample you before you can kill it.
After you kill this legendary beast, sell its pelt to Gus Macmillan. He will then craft it into the Payta Hood and Coat, which you can purchase for a high price. The Payta Hood and Coat is the most expensive among the coats produced from the different Legendary Bison.
Hunting the Legendary Bison
If you are looking to advance in the Naturalist specialist role, do not kill the legendary bison immediately. You can observe and study them to accomplish your mission from Harriet. This way, you do not make her angry and can accomplish more missions quickly.
You can always come back later on to hunt every legendary animal you have seen and tracked. Most players prefer to complete their database of legendary animals in the Naturalist role first.
