Is Deathloop an open-world game?

In 2021, Deathloop is probably the biggest and hottest title ever to launch aside from Cyberpunk. Unfortunately, Cyberpunk failed to deliver what the fans expected, and many were left disappointed.
Thankfully, this is not the case of Arkane Studios’ Deathloop, which was also delayed multiple times before actually being released.

Deathloop’s Story
In Deathloop, you’ll take the role of Colt Vahn, an assassin caught in a time loop on the island of Blackreef. Your main task? Eliminate the eight Visionaries in the game before midnight to stop the time loop.
Leaving one of the Visionaries alive before the day ends will trigger the time loop to restart.
In addition, if you die before eliminating all targets, you’ll wake up in the same area the first time. This will also reset your progress.
Quite annoying, right?
To achieve the ultimate goal of ending the loop, you must explore Blackreef to gather intel about the Visionaries, uncover hidden places, and collect weapons and gears to help you execute your targets.
Each day in the game is divided into four periods, morning, noon, afternoon, and evening.
Fortunately, the time loop in Blackreef is not timed. It allows you to have more flexibility on how you would take out your targets.
The game features an online multiplayer aspect as well, where you can invade other players as Julianna. You can also enable online mode in your game and another player masquerading as Julianna may invade your game.
When you’ve successfully invaded a player, you’ll increase your Hunter Rank, and you’ll be rewarded with various outfits for Colt and Julianna.
What is an Open-World Game?
When it comes to games, an open-world title is a mechanic of using a virtual world that the player can explore freely, interact with objects, and decide when to take a mission or quest. This is well different from the traditional linear approach where quests are handed over to players.
One of the best implementations of an open-world game is Grand Theft Auto III. It has been the standard of this genre ever since.
Games that feature open or free-roaming worlds lack level structures like walls, locked doors, and hidden structures that prevent players from exploring beyond the current level.
Instead, players in an open-world title are limited by geographic features like the ocean in Grand Theft Auto V or impassable mountains in Red Dead Redemption.
Open-world titles also don’t have loading screens when you change from one location to the other, as the entire world is generated at the start of the game. These titles also use unique storage and memory techniques to load game resources dynamically and seamlessly.
Is Deathloop an Open World Game?
Unfortunately, Deathloop doesn’t fit the category of an open-world game. However, it is also not a linear title. Instead, Deathloop is a combination of both formulas. At the start of the game, players will be forced to follow a specific path. This will introduce you to the game mechanics and how it should be played.
Once you’ve dropped a few hours into Deathloop, players are given the option to leave an area anytime. However, even if you’re free to roam around Blackreef, the game is still not close to other open-world titles.
