For instance, if you make the Mint Mace, you should prioritize hunting down Ladybirds and Ladybird Larvae. Once you have gathered enough Tough Gunk to make the Salt Morning Star, you can begin hunting Black Ox Beetles and Termites. 

Eventually, you will have a weapon type to deal with the weakness of every creature in the Upper Yard. This should enable you to farm Tough Gunk much better.
