How to Counter Yone in League of Legends

Want to know how you can counter Yone in League of Legends?

Yone is usually banned in League of Legends since he’s a very annoying opponent to deal with. Since he can deal both magical and physical damage, it’s difficult to build the right items against him without sacrificing offensive items.

If only you can carry unlimited items on the game, this won’t be much of a problem.

Unfortunately, we can’t do that.

If you face Yone on the top or middle lane, it’s best to use mobile melee champions to keep up with him. Some great choices would be the likes of Renekton, but other ranged mages can also go hand in hand with Yone.

If you’re tired of having to face Yone in ranked games, we’ve got you covered.

Today, we’ll show you how to counter Yone in League of Legends.

Let’s begin!

1. Don’t Force Things.

When we face Yone in the lane, we often get carried away and become too aggressive. Most of us think that if we can harass him early, he won’t be able to get his items on time, and we can snowball the lane.

However, we have to remember that Yone has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

Yone has the ability to teleport to his original cast location. While it’s usually used to create separation, some players might utilize this ability to lure you into the jungle to set up a gank.

With that in mind, we recommend you think twice before chasing him into darker portions of the map where you don’t have a vision just to secure a kill.

Although kills are always better, forcing Yone to back and miss some EXP and gold is still a win.

Now, if you really want to kill him, wait for him to activate his E ability and deal some damage. Once he gets back, don’t bother chasing him and just wait. After 5 seconds from the initial cast, you can kill him once he returns to his original location.

Another way to kill Yone without too much risk is by asking your jungler with CC to gank him.

If you can lock him down with hard crowd control, he can’t use his E ability, which prevents him from running away from the fight.

2. Build Defensive Items.

Being a champion that builds AD items and mostly deals AD damage, it’s crucial for you to buy defensive items to reduce his damage output in team fights. If he gets ahead in terms of net worth, we suggest prioritizing some armor items before buying your offensive builds.

With that said, having more armor to tank his damage means that it will be harder for Yone to burst you done in one go. Building defensive items will also force Yone to readjust his build and invest in armor penetration.

This should delay his progress and give your team a better chance of coming back.

Ideally, most Yone users will prioritize building Phantom Dancer / Shive together with Infinity Edge to take advantage of his core power spike. By forcing him to purchase armor penetration items, you can delay this power spike, which can be costly during team fights.

3. Select Champions with CC.

As we’ve mentioned, Yone will have a hard time playing against champions with crowd control. Choosing champions with crowd control is an excellent way of countering Yone, making it harder for him to perform aggressive plays and get in and out of the clash.

However, since Yone is incredibly fast and mobile, you’d want to choose champions with easy to land CC abilities.

For instance, Ahri’s E is crowd control, but it has a small hitbox, making it harder for you to land it on Yone while he dashes in and out of the fight. On the other hand, Lissandra’s W and R would be easier to land against Yone.

4. Don’t Group Up on Clashes.

Yone has one of the strongest ultimates in League of Legends. It deals a decent amount of mixed damage and has crowd control effects. Since it’s an AoE and could hit multiple champions at once, it’s vital that you don’t give him the chance to lock down your entire team.

So how do you do that?

Well, this can be achieved by not grouping too closely during team fights. This means that you should avoid standing close to each other while engaging the enemy team and leave enough distance for you to run in case he uses his ult.

Another point to remember is to avoid putting yourself in chokepoints where your team is forced to group up.

Some chokepoints to avoid are the jungle camps, the dragon camp, and inside Baron’s pit. All these places can be easily covered by Yone’s ultimate, allowing him to land his ult and CC to your entire team.

Once this happens, his allies can quickly go in and wipe out your team.

5. Use Range Advantage.

Ranged champions will always have the advantage against melee in the early stages. As Yone is played in any role, there will be times when he’ll be put against ranged enemies. When this happens, he can be harassed easily.

If you find yourself in this position, make the most out of it and do whatever it takes to bully him down your lane. This should delay his items, EXP, and power spikes, leaving you plenty of room to cross out objectives while he’s not yet online.

If you’re successful, your team probably has a big lead, and it will be close to impossible for Yone to turn the tide even if he gets his items.
