The hype around Minecraft’s Caves and Cliffs update was massive for multiple reasons. Firstly, it was the first big update after a long time in Minecraft and had two parts. Besides this, many new biomes, resources, blocks, and items were coming out with this update. The Amethyst Shards were part of the first part of the Caves and Cliffs update.

Amethyst is purple-colored, similar to real life, and found in special underground structures. It grows on special blocks and can make different resources such as Tinted Glass or Spyglass. Overall, Amethyst is an interesting block, and players in Minecraft should try to find it. Below is how to get and use Amethyst Shards in Minecraft.

Where to Find Amethyst

Players can find Amethyst in Amethyst Geodes. An Amethyst Geode is a naturally spawning terrain formation found underground only in the Overworld. The player can differentiate these by the outer layer of Basalt blocks, which are dark gray with a wavy pattern. Inside is a layer of Calcite blocks that are off-white with cracks in them.

The innermost layer is the Amethyst blocks which are purple, and players can locate Amethyst Crystals on some blocks. An inner layer of the Geode is mostly Amethyst Blocks, with some that are Budding Amethyst Blocks that spawn the Amethyst Crystals. This is where players can get Amethyst Shards and craft different items from them.

Amethyst Geodes can generate between a Y level of negative sixty-four and a Y level of thirty. It doesn’t matter whether the generate structures setting is toggled on or off. The Geode will spawn regardless. Besides this, each chunk also has a one upon twenty-four chance of generating a Geode. They can even override Mineshafts and Caverns.

How to Collect Amethyst Shards

The Budding Amethyst blocks are the only source of collecting Amethyst in Minecraft. These are purple blocks with a small cross-shaped indentation, which signifies they can grow Amethysts. The Amethyst that forms on them grows in the form of Amethyst Clusters. There are four stages of growth of the Amethyst Clusters.

The first three stages are known as the Amethyst Buds. These are smaller in size than the fully grown Amethyst Clusters. Amethyst Buds have small, medium, and large forms that don’t drop any Amethyst Shards on breakage. They emit light levels of different levels. For example, Small emits one light level, Medium emits two, and Large emits four.

Amethyst Clusters are the fully grown forms of Amethyst Buds and emit a light level of five. Players can mine these Clusters without any enchantments, and it has a chance of dropping a maximum of four shards. However, only a Pickaxe will allow this number. Any other tool drops only two shards. These numbers can be increased with Fortune.

The Fortune I enchantment has a one upon three chance of dropping eight shards on breakage with an average of five shards. Fortune II gives a twenty-five percent chance of giving eight to twelve shards and an average of seven shards. Surprisingly, Fortune III gives a twenty percent chance of giving eight, twelve, or sixteen shards.

Players can mine the Amethyst Cluster Block in any growth stage with any Silk Touch tool. For example, they can even use a Wooden Pickaxe, but it should have the Silk Touch enchantment. This block looks different than the rest, and players can use this for decoration. Overall, Amethyst is an interesting resource, and it’s worth collecting it.

Making a Spyglass

The Amethyst Shards have different uses in Minecraft, such as crafting different items. One of the items is the Spyglass which counters an ongoing problem of Minecraft. Namely, looking at faraway terrain and scouting long distances without moving was the problem, and this problem solves it. Spyglass is an intriguing item for Minecraft players.

In the earlier days of Minecraft, there was no way of zooming at extensive ranges. Consequently, players had to move this distance to see what was in that area finally. One solution was downloading Optifine, mod players use to optimize the game. A secondary feature of the mod was allowing players to zoom far away.

Now, players can use the Spyglass without having to download anything. To make this, the player only needs two items. First is a single Amethyst Shard that players can collect from Amethyst Geodes. The second item is two pieces of Copper Ingots. Players can find Copper easily as it’s present not too deep underground.

To make the Spyglass, the player should open the Crafting Table and place the Amethyst Shard in the top-center block. Next, place the two Copper Ingots right below the Amethyst Shard in the Crafting Grid. This will craft the Spyglass, which players can now use to magnify their vision.

To use the Spyglass, hold it in hand and right-click to zoom wherever the player is looking. This will instantly zoom in with a square vignette around the player’s view. However, zooming in doesn’t mean that players will be able to see everything. For instance, mobs that are too far away to render will not render even if the player zooms in on them.

Making Tinted Glass

Now that the player knows how to get and use Amethyst Shards in Minecraft, it’s time to use them. Amethyst Shards make another block in the game. This is the Tinted Glass, another variant of regular Glass in Minecraft. Initially, players could only make Stained Glass in Minecraft of different colors and also Glass Panes.

The Tinted Glass is a black-grayish block in Minecraft that completely blocks light while being visually see-through. This means that no light source will pass through these blocks and they remain transparent so players can continue to see through them. Players can use these to decorate their homes or builds creatively.

The Tinted Glass does not break like its Glass counterparts and instead drops as an item when the player breaks it. It does not matter whether the player uses a tool or his hand. The Glass drops as a block nonetheless. There is no way of obtaining Tinted Glass except by crafting it with two resources. Namely, these are Amethyst Shards and Glass blocks.

How to Craft Tinted Glass

To craft the Tinted Glass, the player first has to gather four Amethyst Shards, which they can find on Budding Amethyst Blocks. Next, they need a single Glass block. They can obtain this by collecting Sand from the Desert biome or beaches. Next, put that Sand block in a Furnace and smelt it. A single Sand block gives a single piece of Glass.

The player can craft the Tinted Glass by placing the Glass in the middle of the Crafting Grid. Next, place the four Amethyst Shards on the top, left, right, and bottom blocks. This will give two Tinted Glasses to the player.

Minecraft is famous for its limitless creativity and the constant addition of new resources to the game. Amethyst Shards are one of them and are indeed an interesting block in the game. Hopefully, this article on how to get and use Amethyst Shards in Minecraft will help you find these new blocks.
